Saturday May 16th

9th Ave. International Food & Street Festival

“Since it began in 1973, this festival has become an amazing celebrating of food and culture that brings in over a million visitors each yer. From 37th Street to 57th Street, Ninth Avenue closes to cars and the festival takes over. The festival is a fabulous expression of the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood – teeming with ethnic food shops and fine restaurants and offering an eclectic global smorgasbord of national and regional foods… The types of food featured include Argentinian, Brazilian, Cajun, Chinese, Cuban, Dominican, Ethiopian, French, German, Greek, Haitian, Indian, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Mexican, Moroccan, Pakistani, Polish, Puerto Rican, Peruvian, Senegalese, Sicilian, Southern, Spanish, Thai, Trinidadian, Turkish, and Ukrainian.”

3rd Annual Dance Parade

Date: Saturday, May 16th
Time: 1:00pm – 7:00pm
Location: Kicks off at 27th and Broadway, parade route here
Cost: Free

The third annual New York City Dance Parade will attract nearly 7,000 dancers and twice as many supporters to the streets of Manhattan today. They kick off on 27th and street boogie down Broadway, hula, swing and irish step their way past Union Square and into University Place. At Eighth Street they’ll Salsa, Tango and Waltz East into Saint Marks Street. The House, Techno and Disco floats will have afternoon shoppers wigglin’ as they watch them get down in the heart of the East Village. A straight shot from there moves the parade to DanceFest in Tompkins Square. At DanceFest (3pm – 7pm) check out free dance performances, take free dance lessons and enjoy a Dance Party.

“It’s the third year for Popfest NYC! Prepare to hear some incredible indiepop from across the US and the world. Over 30 bands playing over 4 nights in New York City.” While most of the Popfest events carry a pricetag, today’s show at Cake Shop is totally free! Check out Hidden Ghost Balloon Ship (MI, 3:15pm), The 1959 Hat Company (OH, 4:00pm), Strega (NYC, 4:45pm) and Springfactory (Sweden, 5:30pm)

Free Yoga in the Park

Feel like doing some yoga? Want to chill in a park? Have no money? No problem, non-profit yoga organization Hosh Yoga has all three covered for you. Come on over to McCarren park this Saturday to do some yoga in the style of Power Vinyasa. Some mats will be available, but bring your own if you have one.

Pay-What-You-Wish Saturdays at the Guggenheim

The Guggenheim Museum flips the script on us. They will host Pay-What-You-Wish hours on Saturday evenings from 5:15pm – 7:45pm. These extended Saturday hours will replace the Friday Pay-What-You-Wish program.

LitCrawl

NYC’s LitCrawl returns with 11 literary events jam-packed into two hours–many happening at once. The event kicks off at 7 p.m. at a scattering of East Village venues and angles: KGB (Harper Perennial trivia), Bowery Poetry Club (BOMB Magazine’s BOMB-aoke), and four others, then shifts an hour later to the Lower East Side with more events, including: Opium Magazine (interviews with Chris Kennedy and more), Gallery Bar (FSG feat. Michael Idov). All finishes up with a literary-based after-party at Fontana’s at 9 p.m. and goes until the wee hours. Complete schedule and maps here.

Veggie Pride Parade

“The First Veggie Pride Parade in America took place in Greenwich Village, New York City, in May 2008. A repeat performance is scheduled for Sunday, May 17, 2009. Just as last year, the parade will line up at 11 a.m. and launch at Noon in Manhattan’s Olde Meat District (outside, in front of 42 Gansevoort Street, 10014), that is, where 9th Ave., Gansevoort St., Greenwich St., and Little West 12th St. intersect). It will culminate in Union Square Park (northern end) where a festival of music, speakers and exhibitors will take place. And again, just as last year, parade participants will wear costumes and carry sign boards announcing their pride in their vegetarian lifestyle. Local restaurants and veggie and veg-friendly groups will represent themselves with banners.”

Park Slope 5th Avenue Street Fair

The annual 5th Avenue Street Fair in Park Slope is not a cookie cutter street fair, and with lots of entertainment along the route, it’s always a worthwhile day for music lovers. 5th Avenue also happens to be home to both Union Hall and Southpaw, not to mention lots of good restaurants (like V Spot) and bars (like The Gate). Southpaw will have outdoor stages at both Southpaw and The Gate. Their lineup is The Persuasions / The Nouvellas / Chin Chin / Miss Fairchild / Keys & Crates / Sonia’s Party & Everyone’s Invited /BeetRoot / Josephine Band / Puppetryarts / Questions for a Super Champion / Blame The Patient / Chances With Wolves DJ’s / DJ’s PQ & SuZan Z Anthony. Plus, inside Southpaw will the NYC Punk & Underground Record Fair with “30+ tables of punk, hc, power pop, d.i.y, new wave & indee music + A FULL BAR”. The record fair, however, host a $5 entry fee (via Brooklyn Vegan).

Each of the four films screening features sections of the 21st-century-score, “The Sounds of Science,” created specially by YO LA TENGO to accompany Painleve’s films.
